Mass production is all about assembly that requires fastening components together for subassemblies or finish assemblies, which is completed with welding, riveting, screwing and other processing methods. But what will happen if we use adhesives? Dennis Ngo, application development senior expert at 3M, shows us the feasibility of using industrial adhesives as an alternative to mechanical fastening and welding solutions. He said, “Great achievements have been achieved in adhesives. There are various adhesives with different attributes…Structural adhesives have a very strong bond that works as well as a weld. Even weaker adhesives like tapes can offer sufficient bonding for industrial use.” Industrial adhesives are commonly applied in sealing tubes and binding sheet metals, etc., and adhesive bonding shows strengths in speed. “With adhesives, you can get results rapidly with a PHB tape,” Ngo continued. “You also get a much cleaner look if you use PHB tape to replace riveting. You just apply the tape, stick on the other part or sheet metal, put some pressure and that’s it.” Adhesive bonds not only save time, but they also take away the need for experienced labor. “To weld two pieces of sheet metal together, you must grind it down and it takes a lot of time…Welding also needs skilled labor with training required. With tape solutions, there’s minimal training” Ngo explained.
