AAI Cooperates with Velcro to Launch New Dry Adhesive

Akron Ascent Innovations (AAI) has developed a dry adhesive that can stick to almost anything without leaving a residue according to the company’s report. The new adhesives have strong shear adhesion but a low peel strength and very minimal tackiness. The company says there’s no stickiness left behind after peeling them away from surfaces.

The president of AAI, a senior research fellow at Akron University, says that the newly established cooperation with Velcro will help AAI to market its product much more effectively. Velcro sees a market opportunity for the adhesive in interior decoration. With Velcro, pictures and hangings can be attached to walls, and in turn, a dry adhesive backing will attach the Velcro to the surface of walls or windows.

The versatility of the adhesive is shown by its ability to bond with a wide variety of substrates including glass, plastic, steel, and drywall. Further applications in the packaging, automotive, personal care, medical and construction industries are being explored. However, its first use seems likely to stem from Velcro’s concept, and the resulting product is anticipated to be available by the end of 2017.
